Teaching direction

I have a student who is from China and needed help relating compass directions:
I offered this tip:

Start with his body as a concrete model

North (Noggin) - using my son Michael as the model

South (Shoes)

West (left hand 3 fingers up shaped like a 'w'), East (right hand up three fingers out shaped like 'E') - reinforce that WE spells we - so we can remember West is left and East is right.

Then take the directions to a flat plane (hallway).
Tell your student to move in a direction (1 step East, 2 steps South etc)

Last and final step is to look at the globe/sphere to show that while it appears to be flat and 1 dimensional - directions really happen in many dimensions :)
